This One Hit Wonder from a Norwegian duo is a little over 10 years old.  Back then, I was commuting from San Francisco to Temecula in Southern California and back again every weekend.  It took 6 months to sell our house there after I had accepted a role in San Francisco.  During those long drives, this was one of those songs that would pop up on my feed and I'd crank it.

Not sure if it means anything to anyone else, but it hit number one in several charts in 2014 -- the highest-charting song from a Norwegian artist since "Take On Me" by A-ha in 1985.

Unlike "Life In One Day" (https://youtu.be/0l0cRb3zTeM), this has a features a single-note bass line on the verses and a funky little pattern for the choruses.  Originally, I thought the bass was silent on the verses, but after splitting the tracks and listening to the bass track solo, I could tell the artist was playing whole notes on low C over the odd numbered measures.

I recorded this on July 4th -- US Independence Day, so I thought I would dress appropriately.

Am I Wrong?

This song popped up on a stream recently.  It's a familiar Howard Jones minor hit from the Summer of 1985 that barely broke the top 20.  After the melodic intro, the bouncy bass line jumped out at me.  Seemed like it might be fun to try to learn.

Most songs have a simple line on the verse and something a little more funky on the chorus.   This song, it's reversed.  The syncopated rhythm on the verse contrasts with simple quarter notes on G during the chorus.

Life In One Day

A few of the musicians from one of my cover bands have decided to try forming a classic country cover band.  There's an appetite for that genre in the SF East Bay and not a lot of bands in that swim lane.  

Admittedly, country isn't really my thing.  However, some of the songs on the list are fun to play, like this crossover hit which made it to number 1 on the hot 100 chart and 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1976.

I've been considering playing all our country gigs on a fretless bass to achieve that classic upright bass sound -- which to me sounds like playing rubber bands.  Frets on a stringed instrument are like autotune for vocalists, guaranteeing a consistent tune regardless of precise finger position behind the fret.  Fretless is not at all forgiving.  Not sure if I'll totally commit to going all fretless on country at this point.  We'll see...
