A few of the musicians from one of my cover bands have decided to try forming a classic country cover band. There's an appetite for that genre in the SF East Bay and not a lot of bands in that swim lane.
Admittedly, country isn't really my thing. However, some of the songs on the list are fun to play, like this crossover hit which made it to number 1 on the hot 100 chart and 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1976.
I've been considering playing all our country gigs on a fretless bass to achieve that classic upright bass sound -- which to me sounds like playing rubber bands. Frets on a stringed instrument are like autotune for vocalists, guaranteeing a consistent tune regardless of precise finger position behind the fret. Fretless is not at all forgiving. Not sure if I'll totally commit to going all fretless on country at this point. We'll see...
