At one of our recent “Retroflection” rehearsals, our guitarists said, “Name that tune” and played 2 chords. I recognized those 2 chords instantly as the first two chords from this song. Turned out it wasn’t the song he had in mind.

This song is a fun song to play, especially for a beginner. There are only 3 notes: C, F, and G. Two more, if you count the short bridge before the 2nd and 3rd verses. Then you just add A and B, walking from G back up to C.

Midnight Blue

Last month, temps in Northern California hit record highs. As I was driving to an outdoor gig (in the shade, thankfully), this song popped into my head. Later, as I was scrolling through the different versions of this song, I ran across this Ace Of Base cover. It’s in the same key and has the exact same bass line from the original Bananarama version, but had a more modern arrangement.

The Ace Of Base version has a few sections, including the intro, where the bass is not playing. I stuck pretty close to their arrangement.

Cruel Summer

I think I’m about to hop onto an R.E.M. kick. Prepare for more soon. They created so many fun, uptempo songs in the 80s. Most have really distinctive bass lines. But I have to admit, I can make sense of any of their lyrics.
